What is a constraint impact calculator?

It is a quick way to check which part of a workflow is limiting total output, then test whether a proposed fix changes the whole system or only makes one local activity look better.

The problem it solves

Most teams can name a slow or annoying step. That does not always mean it is the step controlling completed work. A constraint impact calculator turns a rough process into a simple capacity model so the team can ask a sharper question: if we improve this step, does total output actually increase?

What you need to enter

The calculator uses practical estimates: demand, the main steps, average minutes per unit, available working time, parallel people or machines, availability, the percentage of units visiting each step and repeat work. It is built for early scoping, so rough estimates are acceptable as long as the assumptions are visible.

A simple example

Imagine demand is 45 client requests per day. The team has three repeatable steps:

New request triage

60 per day

Enough capacity for today's demand.

Specialist review

38 per day

The lowest-capacity step, so it caps completed output.

Final response

55 per day

Busy, but not the first place to fund.

In this case, improving final response may feel helpful locally, but it will not lift completed requests while specialist review still limits the workflow. Improving specialist review is more likely to change total output, at least until the next constraint appears.

When it is useful

Use it before hiring, automating, outsourcing, adding overtime or launching a full improvement project. It helps founders, operators and consultants decide what deserves deeper analysis first.

What it does not claim

It is not a full simulation tool, audited financial model, process-mining platform or substitute for professional judgement. It does not automatically collect enterprise data. It gives a transparent first-pass estimate from user-supplied assumptions.
